The Mummy 4 Is Official: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Return in ‘The Book of the Dead’

Hello and Assalam-o-Alaikum!

I hope you are doing well. Movie fans, I have news that will make every 90s kid smile! After 25 years, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are coming back together as Rick and Evie — and their new film finally has an official title and release date. Let me tell you everything in simple words.

What Happened? The Short Version

On October 15, 2026, Universal Pictures announced that the fourth Mummy film — starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz — will be officially titled “The Mummy: The Book of the Dead”. It will release in cinemas on October 15, 2027 — exactly one year from the announcement! TBS News, Men’s Journal, and Flickering Myth all reported the announcement, based on original reporting by Variety and Deadline. For more film stories, visit our Entertainment and Latest sections.

Why Is This Reunion Such a Big Deal?

Let me take you back in time. In 1999, The Mummy released and became a worldwide sensation — earning over $400 million. Brendan Fraser played the brave adventurer Rick O’Connell, and Rachel Weisz played the smart and funny librarian-turned-hero Evelyn. Their chemistry was pure magic. The sequel, The Mummy Returns (2001), was even bigger — over $430 million.

But then came the heartbreak: Rachel Weisz did not return for the third film, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), and another actress played Evelyn. Fans never accepted that change. Now, 25 years after they last shared the screen, Rick and Evie are finally back together. For fans who grew up watching these films on VCDs and cable TV — including millions in Pakistan — this is pure nostalgia!

Who Else Is Coming Back?

The reunion is bigger than just the two stars:

John Hannah returns as Jonathan — Evie’s funny, cowardly-but-lovable brother.
Oded Fehr returns as Ardeth Bay — the noble Medjai warrior.
Kevin J. O’Connor returns as Beni — the sneaky sidekick. This is a surprise because Beni was eaten by scarabs in the first film! How he comes back is a mystery.
New faces: Michael Johnston and Numan Acar join the cast.

There are also rumours — not confirmed — that Arnold Vosloo might return as the villain Imhotep. Imagine that!

Who Is Making It?

The film is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — together known as Radio Silence. They made the fun horror film Ready or Not (2019) and successfully restarted the Scream series in 2022. They know how to mix scares, action, and humour — exactly what a Mummy film needs.

The script is by David Coggeshall, and Brendan Fraser himself is an executive producer — meaning he has creative control and truly believes in this project.

One more important thing: this film will ignore the events of the third film (the 2008 one without Weisz) and continue directly from The Mummy Returns. In simple words: the story you loved is back; the one you did not is forgotten!

What Is “The Book of the Dead”?

Good question! In the films, the Book of the Dead is an ancient Egyptian book of magic spells — reading from it can wake the dead (which is how all the trouble starts!). In real history, the Book of the Dead was a real collection of ancient Egyptian funeral texts — spells meant to guide the dead safely to the afterlife. The films took this real idea and turned it into movie magic. So the title promises: ancient curses, resurrected mummies, and big adventure!

Brendan Fraser’s Beautiful Comeback

This story is also about Brendan Fraser himself. After being one of the biggest stars in the world, he went through very difficult years — health problems, personal struggles, and Hollywood forgetting him. Then came his incredible comeback: he won the Oscar for Best Actor for The Whale (2022), and the whole world cheered for him. Now he returns to the role that made him famous — this time as a producer too. It feels like a fairy tale, does it not?

My Honest Take

The good side: The original cast, a fun directing duo, and a story that respects what fans loved — this has all the ingredients of a joyful blockbuster. One year of waiting will feel long, but the set photos from London already look exciting!

The careful side: Reviving old franchises is risky — sometimes the magic does not come back (remember the 2017 Tom Cruise Mummy reboot that flopped?). The directors are known for horror more than big adventure. Fingers crossed!
