Hi everyone! Maryam here. How are you all doing today? I hope you are having a good day, and I hope your week is going well.
I have big news for you today. Pakistan has just received a big honor. A very big one. The kind of news that does not come every day. So sit with me, and let me tell you all about it in simple words.
What Happened?
Pakistan will chair the boards of the IMF and the World Bank in 2027. Indeed, you read that right.
The IMF is the International Monetary Fund. It is a big world group that helps countries with money problems. The World Bank is another big world group. It gives loans to countries so they can build schools, roads, and hospitals. You can read more about the IMF here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Monetary_Fund and about the World Bank here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Bank
These two groups hold a big meeting every year. So in 2027, Pakistan will be the chair of these meetings. That means Pakistan will lead the meeting.
The news was announced on October 16, 2026. It also happened at the yearly meeting of the IMF and World Bank in Bangkok, Thailand. Pakistan’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Ahad Khan Cheema, was named as the incoming chair. Mr. Cheema is also Pakistan’s governor to the World Bank.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs called it a “historic milestone.” And it really is historic. Pakistan last held this chair in 1953. That is more than 70 years ago! Think about it. Your grandparents were young back then. Now, after all these years, Pakistan is back in the chair.
Why Is This Such a Big Deal?
Think of it this way. For example, the IMF and the World Bank have 191 member countries. That is almost every country in the world. Being the chair means Pakistan gets to lead the big yearly meeting. Also, Pakistan gets to help run the talks. And Pakistan gets to set the tone of the meeting.
Our minister said Pakistan wants to help all countries talk to each other in a fair way. He also said Pakistan wants to raise the voice of developing countries. Developing countries are countries that are still growing, like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and many countries in Africa. These countries often feel that the big rich countries do not listen to them. With Pakistan in the chair, their voice may be heard more.
Let Me Tell You the Full Truth
Now, I want to be honest with you. I always want to tell you the full truth at Pak Unfiltered. So here it is.
This chair is mostly about running the meeting. However, it does not mean Pakistan can now decide who gets loans and who does not. The job is about good talks, fair rules, and smooth meetings. It is a procedural and diplomatic job. Procedural means it is about how the meeting runs. Diplomatic means it is about good relations between countries.
The Dawn newspaper explained this very clearly in their report. I think it is important that you know this. We should celebrate this news. But we should also know the full picture. A smart reader knows both sides. And you, my dear reader, are a smart reader.
How Is the Chair Chosen?
You may ask: how did Pakistan get this honor? Well, the answer is simple and fair. The chair rotates among member countries. That means different countries take turns every year. It is not only for the biggest or richest countries. Even smaller and growing countries get a turn. This is how the rules are written.
Pakistan was chosen at the plenary session in Bangkok. In fact, plenary means the main meeting where everyone is present. More than 15,000 people from 191 countries were at these yearly meetings. The meetings ran from October 12 to October 18.
Who Held the Chair Before Pakistan?
Pakistan is not the first country from South Asia to get this honor. For instance, India held the chair in 1950. Pakistan held it in 1953. Back then, our finance minister was Mohamad Ali. He chaired the eighth yearly meeting in Washington.
Sri Lanka, which was called Ceylon back then, held the chair in 1968. Nepal held it in 1999. Now, after a very long wait, Pakistan is back. The 2027 meeting will be held in Washington from October 4 to October 9.
What Did Our Minister Do After the Announcement?
After the big announcement, Mr. Cheema got a full briefing from the World Bank’s corporate secretariat. The briefing told him what his duties will be as chair.
He also met two important people. He met Ms. Aradhana Kumar-Capoor. She is the vice president and corporate secretary of the World Bank Group. They talked about how to work together during Pakistan’s time as chair.
He also met Mr. Carlos Carvallo Spalding, the governor of Paraguay’s central bank and the outgoing chair. They exchanged views on the role. This is how good handovers happen. The old chair guides the new chair.
Where Does Pakistan Stand With the IMF Today?
Now let me tell you where Pakistan stands with the IMF today. This will help you understand the full story.
Currently, Pakistan is taking loans from the IMF under two programs. One is called the Extended Fund Facility, or EFF. It is worth $7 billion.
In addition, the other program is called the Resilience and Sustainability Facility, or RSF. It is worth $1.4 billion.
Pakistan may soon get about $1.2 billion more from the IMF. This will happen after the IMF’s Executive Board gives its approval. The IMF staff and Pakistan’s team reached an agreement on the latest review on October 7.

What Does This Mean for Ordinary People?
This is the question I always ask. So what does big news mean for you and me? For the common person?
In simple words: this is a moment of pride. Indeed, the world trusts Pakistan to lead an important world meeting.
Will it make prices go down tomorrow? No, my friend. Will it end our money problems in one day? No. But it is a good sign. It brings respect. And in world affairs, respect matters a lot. Respect opens doors. It brings better talks. It brings more friends.
My Final Thoughts
I am happy about this news. Pakistan waited a very long time. More than 70 years. Now our flag will fly high at one of the world’s most important meetings.
And I am proud that I could explain it to you in simple words. Big news should be for everyone, not just for experts.
I will keep following this story. When the 2027 meeting comes, I will be here to explain it all again. That is my promise to you.
