Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns! Called Up for India vs West Indies T20I Decider as Arshdeep Gets Injured

Hello and Assalam-o-Alaikum!

I hope you are doing well. Big news from cricket! Just one day before the biggest match of the series, India has called back a very experienced bowler — because their star bowler got hurt. Let me explain everything in simple words.

What Happened? The Short Version

India’s cricket board (BCCI) announced on October 16, 2026 that veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been added to India’s squad for the fifth and final T20I against the West Indies — the series decider. He comes in as cover for Arshdeep Singh, who hurt his bowling shoulder during the fourth T20I in Hyderabad. The final match will be played on Saturday, October 17, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, with the series tied at 2-2. Reuters and The Economic Times reported the news. If you missed how the series got to 2-2, read my earlier story on the West Indies win in the fourth T20I. For more cricket stories, visit our Sports and Latest sections.

How Did Arshdeep Get Hurt?

During the fourth T20I in Hyderabad on Wednesday, Arshdeep Singh took a blow to his bowling shoulder — the shoulder he uses to throw the ball. It happened while he was batting, and he had to retire hurt (leave the field because of injury). That match ended with the West Indies winning by 24 runs and levelling the series 2-2.

The BCCI said a decision on whether Arshdeep can play the final will be taken just before the game, depending on how his shoulder heals. So right now, nobody knows for sure if he will play.

Who Is Bhuvneshwar Kumar?

If you are new to cricket, let me introduce him simply. Bhuvneshwar Kumar — everyone calls him “Bhuvi” — is 36 years old and one of India’s most clever fast bowlers. He is famous for swing bowling: he makes the ball move in the air like a curve, which confuses batsmen. He has played for India for many years and has taken hundreds of wickets.

Here is the interesting part: Bhuvi is returning to India’s T20I team after nearly four years! That is a very long time. It shows how much the team trusts his experience for such a big, pressure-filled match.

Why Is This Match So Important?

This is the decider — the fifth and last match of the series, and the score is 2-2. Whoever wins this game wins the whole series. There is no second chance.

India is playing at home in Bengaluru, in front of their own fans. The West Indies just won the last game and will be full of confidence. The pressure will be huge on both teams. In such matches, experienced players like Bhuvi — who have played hundreds of big games — can stay calm when young players feel nervous.

What About the New Zealand Series?

Here is more good news for Bhuvi’s fans: he was already picked for India’s T20I series against New Zealand, which starts on October 22 in Christchurch. So this recall is not just a one-match favour — the selectors clearly believe he still has a lot to give to Indian cricket.

India’s Updated Squad

Here is the full squad for the decider, in simple list form:

Captain: Shreyas Iyer
Vice-captain: Tilak Varma
Batsmen: Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir
Wicketkeepers: Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson
Spinners: Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi
Fast bowlers: Arshdeep Singh (doubtful), Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar

What Will Bhuvi Bring to the Team?

Three simple things:

1. Swing with the new ball: In the first few overs, when the ball is new and shiny, Bhuvi can make it swing both ways. West Indies batsmen love to hit hard early — swing bowling can trap them.

2. Smart death bowling: The last overs of a T20 are called “death overs” because so many runs are scored. Bhuvi is a master of slow balls and yorkers (balls that land right at the batsman’s feet).

3. Calm mind: He has played World Cups, IPL finals, and series deciders. Nothing scares him anymore.

My Honest Take

The good side: This is a smart, safe move by India. If Arshdeep is fit, Bhuvi simply adds depth to the squad. If Arshdeep misses out, India has a ready-made replacement with 4 years of hunger to prove himself again. Everybody wins.

The careful side: Four years is a long time away from international T20 cricket. The game has become faster, and young West Indies hitters will attack him from ball one. Bhuvi will need to be at his very best from the first over.

What I will watch: the toss and the team sheet on Saturday — will Arshdeep recover in time, or will Bhuvi walk out in blue again after four years? Here at Pak Unfiltered, I will bring you the result in simple words.
